Can We Rewrite The Stars?

Have you ever sat and thought, "do I really have the power to change my fate?" like can we actually shape our own paths, or is everything already decided? It's one of those deep, late-night questions, isn’t it?

In Islam, we've got this beautiful concept of destiny, or qadr, which is central to our faith. It teaches us that Allah ﷻ knows everything that's going to happen. However, qadr is more layered than it seems. There are two main parts:

  • Qadr mubram is the kind of destiny that is unchangeable, like certain big life events, natural disasters, or even death. These are in Allah’s hands and not something we can alter.
  • Qadr muallaq is the conditional, changeable kind of destiny. It's the part of life that can shift based on our choices, actions, and most importantly—our prayers.

When it comes to qadr muallaq, Allah ﷻ has created space for us to make decisions and take action, which means we are not just passive players in life. The Prophet ﷺ even said that supplication (du’a) can change destiny:

Prophet ﷺ said: Nothing but supplication averts the decree, and nothing but righteousness increases life.
[Tirmidzi | Mishkat Al-Masabih 2233]

Powerful, kan? It shows that while Allah ﷻ has the master plan, He has also given us the tools to shape parts of our future.

Yes, the stars may be written, but we're not completely powerless. This idea of qadr muallaq gives us the responsibility to make choices while trusting Allah’s ultimate wisdom. It's all about balance—putting in the effort and having tawakkul (trust in Him). The Qur'an puts it beautifully:

Indeed, Allah will not change the condition of a people until they change what is in themselves.
[Surah ar-Ra'd: 11]

"Rewriting the stars" is about making thoughtful, ethical choices that align with our faith. Whether it's through prayer, charity, seeking forgiveness, or just staying disciplined—we can steer our lives in a better direction. At the same time, we need to trust that His plan is always the best for us, even when it does not go the way we hoped.

But perhaps you hate a thing, and it is good for you; and perhaps you love a thing, and it is bad for you. And Allah knows, while you know not.
[Surah al-Baqarah: 216]

Whenever we are stuck in tough situations, qadr muallaq reminds us that we can always turn to Allah ﷻ for guidance. We can take action, make choices, and stay aligned with Islamic principles. In the end, it is not about defying fate, rather about seeking harmony with divine wisdom and embracing the opportunity to grow and improve.

There's so much peace in knowing that our faith gives us both the freedom to act and the reassurance that His plan is always for our ultimate good.
